The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) today is a leading institute of the country actively engaged in basic and applied research in Geomagnetism and allied areas of Atmospheric and Space Physics, and Plasma Physics. It started out as a successor to the Colaba observatory, Set up in 1826, where the first regular magnetic observatory in the country was established in 1841. IIG became an autonomous research institute in 1971, and is now under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Indian Institute of Geomagnetism offers Doctoral Programme in Geomagnetism and allied fields.

Selected candidates will be required to do research work at Mumbai or other centers of the institute located at Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu) and Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh).

Scholarship: Rs. 12,000/- per month (consolidated) for the first and second year and Rs.14,000/- per month in subsequent years. In addition, book grant of Rs. 6,000/- per annum is provided to students registered for Ph.D. Hostel accommodation is also provided.

Requirements:
M.Sc./M.Sc. (Tech) in Physics/Applied Physics/Geophysics/Applied Mathematics with a minimum of 60 % marks throughout and Physics as a subject in B.Sc. Those appearing for Master's degree examination in the year 2009 may also apply.

Selection Criteria:
There will be written test at the institute in Mumbai followed by personal interview. Candidates who are in possession of the GATE / NET (for JRF only) certificate valid up to January 2010 in subject code -2 (Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Science) or subject code -5 (Physical Science) will be called directly for the interview.
